Steering tight

Post by Stangyog » Sat Nov 24, 2018 6:53 pm

2006 SEL... Anyone know the size of the universal joint on the steering shaft closest to the rack? Mine needs replaced, and was trying to avoid buying a whole new shaft.

Thanks!

You cant buy just the U-joint. You can either spray it with lube once a month, or buy the whole shaft with the U-joint attached. You would be lucky to find one in a junk yard that doesnt have some wear on it, since the lower one is exposed to the weather. There are two U-joints one under the dash and the one at the steering rack.

I'm pretty sure that fits. You can search analogue 15 * 40mm

2007 Freestyle here, with 140,000 km, in Nova Scotia Canada, first NS winter, steering started to get stiff and sluggish.
I changed the power steering fluid (turkey baster for suction from reservoir) AND sprayed WD-40 on the lower steering shaft universal joint repeatedly, and worked the steering, tapping the u-joint yokes with a small ball peen hammer as well.
Worked great, 90% free" now. Thanks for all the tips.

I ended up getting a new steering shaft. I had got it loosened up and over the winter it got tight again.
