Changed throttle body, still fail safe mode

Post by Ben.and.Candice » Wed Oct 31, 2018 7:02 pm

'05 Ford Freestyle, AWD, 190K miles. I had intermittent "Failsafe mode" like everyone else. Changed the throttle body and am still having problems. What should I change next?

I tried a junk yard throttle body, then an Autozone throttle body. I installed both with the battery disconnected. Then ran it for 20 minutes at idle for the relearn time then drove it around the block at 15 mph. With the first throttle body it was working fine after 3 miles, so I took it to the highway and as soon as I got on the throttle I got the wrench and Failsafe mode. With the new, Auto Zone, throttle body, it failed after two miles around the block.

What should I try next? Is the throttle body defective, or is there another part triggering the problem? Thanks!

You need to scan for codes.

I still have the same codes I had before I changed the throttle body.
Confirmed codes:
P2104 Throttle Actuator Control System - Forced Idle
P2112 Throttle Actuator Control System - Stuck Closed

Pending Codes:
P2104 Throttle Actuator Control System - Forced Idle
P2106 Throttle Actuator Control System - Forced Limited Power,
P2111 Throttle Actuator Control System - Stuck Open,
P2112 Throttle Actuator Control System - Stuck Closed
P2135 Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch "A"/"B" Voltage Correlation

I can limp it to and from work if I'm very careful to keep the gas pedal in the mid range. Any rapid changes like accelerating to get on the highway or letting off the gas suddenly will make the failsafe mode come on. A 10 mile drive requires 5 restarts while I'm driving; meaning I put it in Neutral, turn it off and restart, then drop it into Drive. Not good for the car, but I don't have another option.

Have you seen this?

I'd check the wiring harness from the throttle body for rubbing, which might have damaged wires. IDK where the accelerator pedal sensor is, but check the wiring harness there also. If harnesses are good, Id try a accelerator pedal sensor from the junk yard. If you still get codes, Id think its the PCM.

Thank you for the information. I'll try to make it by the junk yard this weekend to get an accelerator pedal and a wire harness for the throttle body.
