Steering Rack question

Post by Ted Whofar » Mon Jun 18, 2018 7:24 am

Hi Guys,

I picked up an '08 TX with very stiff power steering. When trying to turn the wheel, the PS pump seems to be under load with no unusual noises. I read lots of articles about this issue and decided to remove the steering rack following airlinepilot's write up . When I removed the rack, I could easily turn it from lock to lock using a pair of pliers on the steering input shaft. Could even move it with my bare hand. Now I'm not sure if the rack is the problem or not as I thought it would be very difficult to move by hand. Any ideas on if the rack is good or not? The rack is a reman unit, so not the original.

Thanks.

U-joint is free. It was the first thing I tried.

Did you check fluid... If black could be Degraded. I have had stiff steering on my freestyle flush old out with new and back to nice easy steering.

Hi Ted,

I may be off base here, but, have you looked at the Intermediate Steering Shaft?

I seem to recall that topic being discussed on the forum before. And while I don't have any experience with the Intermediate Steering Shaft on a Freestyle/Taurus X, I did have one fail on a newer F-150, and it very much feels like a power steering issue when it first appears.

Good luck!

Brad

Thanks for the ideas guys.

I reinstalled the rack and followed Scotty Kilmer's video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjId3bfMBUQ). All works ok with the front wheels off the ground. When I get the car back on all four tires, I'll let you know the result.

Car is back on the ground and steering is definitely better, but still not totally right. Will probably do another flush to see if that helps.
