'05 Freestyle Hatch won't unlock or open

Post by kenjes97@ » Thu May 31, 2018 12:30 pm

Hatch is locked and not opening. Pried off 2" square on the inside of hatch and can see the handle trying to open it but it won't budge. When trying FOB or driver side door lock/unlock buttons, it seems to make no attempt to work. You can hear other locks working just not the back hatch. Any ideas? Thanks

Did something get caught in the latch?

There might not be power going to the lock for the hatch, check your fuses and relays.

Here is what the actuator looks like. Its just part of the whole assembly which would also have a arm that moves the latch.

If not a fuse or relay, then it could be this item. Im not as familar with the back one as I am the ones for the side doors. Side doors have a actuator motor with a gear on the motor shaft that strips. You can hear the noise of a stripped gear when using the fob or master unlock switch on the drivers door. Since you hear nothing at the hatch using either remote method, and trying to manually trying the hatch release and seeing not being able to work the mechanism all the way to open it, I'd look at the actuator being defective. Gears broke/jammed up, so the arm that releases the hatch latch cant move by either remote or manually. If you can get to the actuator in your hatch, Id try a junk yard for a used assembly, or try ebay for a used. Not a common failure, not seen anyone mention having a bad one on this forum, so used should be ok, you might have one of the rare failed ones.
