07 FWD 163K miles

Post by Douglasskemp » Mon Jan 22, 2018 9:05 pm

We are lucky apparently, our Freestyle has been ours since 2012. We got it used with 73K miles, but we needed a bigger car than our 2002 Kia Rio to shuttle two kiddos in carseats. She now has over 163 thou and just now is getting a misfire on cyl #4. Not to bad for the stock spark plugs. Probably going back to a smaller car since the kids are out of carseats and only one needs a backless booster (check your area's laws as your's may differ.)

These are great cars...just gotta take care of them maintenance-wise... 290,500 + and still kicking ass and chewing gum. ;)

From what I have read so far, most of the folks who run into major issues seem to own AWD versions. Still reading up on this forum though.

Are you aiming to be a part of the 300,000 miles club?

Could you please tell me what maintenance and parts your Freestyle has gone through the years? My friend at the dealer told me I am married to my 06 Freestyle!! I bought mine at $4000 last 2016. So, far I've spent $4000 plus on maintenance and parts. And I am only at 124,+++ miles.

Battery, headlights, brake lights, front/rear brakes (getting ready to do the rear again, 1st time in 7 years), tires, struts, both front axles (just because), tune-up, CVT fluid changed twice, oil changes, starter, 1 rear wheel hub assembly.

Off the top of my head, that is pretty much it. Paid $8700 out the door back in 2010 w/150,000. From a junkyard none-the-less. Seriously. 8)

The CVT fluid change it took a lot of convincing for the dealer to agree with me that there is an HP that needs to be replaced! Only when they brought in a Master Mechanic with 20 plus years of doing transmission did they say YES we need to change the HP filter. I had it done at 120,+++ miles. The recent job was replacing the oil pan and gaskets. Also, I just had both the rear pads and rotors changed. Unfortunately, I will have to bring it back because the calipers keep getting stuck specifically on the right rear wheel. Do you know of any "how to" videos or photos on how to replace calipers for the rear breaks on a Ford Freestyle?

Easy peasy. I forgot. I changed out one rear caliper but only because I f'd up the original when screwing the piston back in. Go to Harbor Freight and but one of these:
https://www.harborfreight.com/automotiv ... 92924.html
Then buy the caliper and put it on. Takes no real time at all.

I will give it a try. When the dealer did my both rear pad and rotors I got billed $367.47. Now, I just want to change the calipers myself to avoid further heartaches.

These are what I'm putting on...you WILL need the kit to turn the pistons back in (except for your new one that is already set) https://www.ebay.com/itm/ABN-Front-and- ... IN&vxp=mtr

Dude, you certainly know your Freestyle! Okay, I'm a bit positive now. Actually, my mechanic freind will guide me as I do the surgical procedure on the calipers. And what brakefluid do you use? And what brand of calipers do you use for the rear brakes?

I use Prestone Dot 3...but it makes no difference as long as it is Dot 3 and fresh, not sitting on a shelf in your garage for years...I forget the caliper...whatever Auto Zone had at the time that was cheap.

Thank you! I think I am all set just as long as I don't forget about the "counterclockwise" in putting it back with the right rear caliper brake.
