Awd malfunction

Post by Glspeers » Thu Jan 04, 2018 1:50 pm

My 05 Freestyle has become very loud , like humming of snow tires coming from underneath and my awd malfunction lite is on could these things be related ?
Any help is greatly appreciated, car used to be great in snow but now no traction, wheels spin on slightest incline
It is awd and do not have snow tires , seems like when I go around a curve the noise goes away

that type of noise is typically a wheel bearing going/gone bad, especially since noise goes away in a turn. if the noise changes pitch with speed it will nearly always be the wheel bearing. awd light is on possibly because the wheel bearing i believe houses the abs sensor which is part of the awd system.

Without hearing it, there could be a wheel bearing, angle gear, input shaft bearing, tire noise.

When does it occur?, does it change with speed, direction, loading, cold hot etc.
