AC Only Blows Cold when Moving

Post by BillRod » Tue Sep 05, 2017 4:42 pm

2006 Freestyle.
Just bought a couple months ago and I have a laundry list of issues but for this post I'll go with the AC Only Blowing Cold when the car is moving.

As soon as I pull to a stop the cold goes away, within a a few seconds of moving it starts to blow cold and seems to stay cold.

Any thoughts?
Thanks!
Bill

I predict bad scroll valve in compressor.

I have a similar weirdness in my a/c. Not only does it occasionally stop blowing cold air when I stop (this problem is infrequent), in general, the compressor does not engage under 72 degrees, been watching this for 2 years, very consistent. Does not really bother me except on cool mornings or when it rains on a late summer day and the air cools off quickly. Then I need the defroster but the temp is too cool for the compressor. really aggravating. Do you have the fully automatic climate control system?

Did not think of the Easy thing to check first.
The Cartridge Fuse under the hood is not there for the Aux AC Fan.
I'll stop by Checker later today to pick up a couple.

Hopefully it's only that but the with all the little issues I'm running into with this car I hope it was not pulled for pulled for a reason....

It's not the Fuse.
I misread the book.

It Is RPM Related.
At Idle RPM the cold goes away but when I increase to 2000 RPM the cold comes back.

Jas88 can you tell me more about the Scroll Valve in the compressor?

Thanks!

Hi BillRod,

The forum thread below outlines some of the specifics around replacing the scroll/compressor control value:

viewtopic.php?t=4329

If you do a forum, or even Google, search you will find plenty of additional information. There several videos on YouTube as well.

Based on the symptoms, yours problem certainly sounds like the control valve.

The Freestyle is also known for leaking PAG oil from the compressor housing, which in-turn results in no/low cooling. If your Freestyle has this issue, you will see PAG oil on the right front lower radiator support (I believe, it may just be a sub-frame cross member). You will see it straight away if you slide under the right front. There is an excellent video on YouTube by "FordTechMakuloco" on how to swap out the compressor.
