need advice on prices FS/Taurus X

Post by badvik » Tue Sep 05, 2017 8:56 am

Hi everybody, I'm new here and need your advices. I'm thinking on buying Freestyle or Taurus X but I can't understand prices on the market, I mean if a car is worth its price or not. My budget for the purchase is 3-4K. Don't have any problems with hands (if needed to do something), but, of course, no timing correction or engine rebuild wanted.
After researching CL I've found:
- Freestyle 2.5-3.5, many offers. But, I'm really, really afraid of CVT. Average mileage is 140-170K mi (sometimes, doubtful).
- Taurus X - there are enough SUVs for 3.5-4.5, seeming not ugly by glimpse, but there are also plenty of for 8-12K. Considering no age difference but of course different conditions, such gap makes me thinking that there would be a dead boy for 4K. Taurus X I'd choose for drivetrain and 3.5.
Generally I understand, that a 06-07 Freestyle for 3.5K must be in better condition, than a 08 Taurus X for the same 3.5-4K, but may be it's mistake and Taurus X is really better to opt for with the money. Please share your opinions, thank you.

The Freestyle only came with the 3.0 Duratech. Pretty bulletproof. The weakness is the CVT. Statistically probably no more problems than a conventional auto trans but susceptible to inadvertent damages if regular trans fluid is added.

The T-Rex only came with the 3.5L and the 6 speed. While we haven't seen it reported here, on other platforms, a water pump failure on the 3.5 has caused engine failure when the coolant mixes with the oil.

A Freestyle with a good CVT is a great car and so would a T-Rex be.
Drove an 06 LTD FWD from July 08 to August 10, moved on to a 2011 Flex

I had one of each.

A 2005 AWD Freestyle SEL and a 2008 AWD Taurus X Limited.

I never had any issues with the CVT - The car was totaled at 91k. Hit by a one ton pickup that ran a red light.

However, I much preferred the drivetrain in the Taurus X. I always felt that it was more responsive and I had the ability to drop it into low and get some engine braking on steep downhills. The low setting on the CVT never did anything useful.

I can delve alot more into the differences between the two if you care.

thanks for your replies. I have read topics here on the forum and going to look some in next week. I'd opt for Taurus X unless those I'm going to see won't be in too tired condition within the budget I have.
That's also why I'm asking for price advice, because prices gap is really unclear for me.
E.g.
this one seems to be a "gift" as per description:

but costs 30% cheaper than this one:
https://cnj.craigslist.org/cto/d/2008-t ... 92130.html
or even half price of this:
https://lancaster.craigslist.org/cto/d/ ... 43419.html
At the same time, there are also other ads for 3.5-4K, quite promising:
