Where's the Transmission Filter?

Post by Freddie » Tue Aug 15, 2017 3:49 am

I have a 06 Mercury Montego with 120,000 miles which I bought used. I would like to change the 6 speed automatic transmission fluid since I am not sure of the maintenance history of the vehicle.

Here's what I know:
Fluid: XT-8-QAW
Capacity: 7.4 quarts (7.0L)
Dipstick location: right side, front of engine near radiator drain

1.Does this transmission have a filter? I have read conflicting information that it does and does not. If yes, is it accessible and easy to change?
2. I assume I'll be able to drain and replace 3 to 4 quarts. Where are the drain and fill locations?
3. I've done a lot of work on my cars over the years. Is this something I can do myself or should I go to a mechanic?

Thanks for your help

Honestly, I don't know. This is a Freestyle forum. And while they are similar, the transmissions are different. No one here (???) has a 6 speed auto, we all have CVT.

I think the "pan" on the 6-speed is on the front of the trans as opposed to the normal location on the bottom. However, I don't know if there is a filter in there or not.
