Just got a 2005 FS

Post by Dolphpb » Thu Apr 13, 2017 3:35 pm

Hello, thank you for letting me join the group. I just recently purchased a 2005 FS with only 23,000 miles. I was really looking for a Taurus X mainly cause of the CVT. My transmission mechanic said don't buy it, Trany will go out and cost $4500. At 23,000 I thought it would be worth a chance. However, I am very encouraged reading here that if I service it right it should last me a long time. I'm just wanting to know how many people get services done by dealer and how many by their mechanic. The local Ford dealer has a bad reputation for foul ups so I'm not sure what to do. Thanks again

Only 23K on an 05?? Wow is that ever a creampuff! Nissan uses a CVT so if you find someone used to servicing them then you should be good. The biggest problem occurs when regular ATF gets used in the CVT or mixed with the CVT specific fluid.

I would change the CVT and HP filter with FoMoCo parts and fluid still. Then love every second of it. My 07 was 8.5 out of 10 when I got it and love it.

1. Welcome to the club.
2. 23,000??? Not saying it isn't possible, but I'd get a Carfax on that mug and check some VIN info. That is awful low. I'll do that in a year and half. Much less 12 years.

But, good for you if it is legitimate.

Just don't ever "dog it" which is to say drive it hard. The CVT will not tolerate lots of torque being applied to it over and over which is how I destroyed my transmission on the 5 fwy in Los Angeles on a 105 degree day blasting in and out of heavy traffic. Wrench light came  on and limp mode sent me to a Ford dealer where it took a month for them to figure out it needed a new transmission under warranty at 65000 miles. I still love the car but go easy now it's just a cruiser. Come to think of it no car I've ever owned hasn't needed a transmission rebuild.

Hi,
I also just purchased a 2005 Freestyle with 87000 miles. I joined this forum to keep up to date with what is going on with the Freestyle as I want mine to last a long time. This is my first car with a CVT and it wasn't until after my purchase that I learned of the potential problems with a CVT. I hope that my Freestyle will reach 200K. Any insight will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Jim

Do it your self. it is a little complicated but well worth the knowledge that it was done correctly.
