Drivers side power seat (reclining) failure

Post by RWHannaway » Sat Apr 08, 2017 2:14 pm

Driver side seat is stuck (motor failure) in a reclined position. Attempting to replace a single motor. There are 3 motors, I believe I have the right one off. Quite easy to remove both the seat and the motor but I can't find a replacement... any suggestions. At a minimum I need to get the seat raised back up.

Surely you can find one at a pick n pull junkyard for cheap?

If you just need to position the seat up can you disconnect the drive shaft going into the motor and manually crank it? Some cars are easier than others to do... Not sure about this one.

I will admit that I have't taken my FS seats out. Typically Ford architecture for seats has 3 motors bolted to the lower seat tracks and frame. The motors drive square flex cables which drive the seat transmission fore and aft, tilt the lower-rear frame and also tilt the seat back.

Once when most models were new you could get motors separate. Most times after they No Longer Available (NLA) or No Longer Produced (NLP). If a part is NLA you may be able to find it New Old Stock or (NOS) online like ebay.

However, the best bet is to find a lower seat track at a salvage yard and use that part. They tend to offer 30, 60, or 12 month warranties. The seat recline motor just went out on my 2000 Explorer.... ebay 40 bucks I got a seat motor pack and track that looked nearly brand new with a year warranty.

FYI unrelated just some brain candy....

there is no federal law that requires the manufacture of parts for X years after production. There law that is on the books Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act which specifies requirements for consumer product warranties and Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations section 541.6 - Requirements for replacement parts.
