Full Synthetic Motor Oil or Blend ?

Post by Scotty17 » Mon Mar 27, 2017 12:00 pm

2005 AWD SEL

I bought a 2005 SEL with 88,000 not sure what type of oil the previous owner used, now
I have 93,000 and will be ready for a oil change soon was wondering should I switch over to full synthetic or stick with a blend as pointed out in the owners manual.

I know full synthetic is better and costs more but I am putting 300 miles a week on it just going to work each day.

Your thoughts

Thanks

Scott

You're fine switching to synthetic at that mileage IMHO, I've made the switch at a lot more miles than that before. Worst case is oil leaks out a tiny bit more than before.

Your call really. But my F150 didn't like when I switched to synthetic. Of course I did it at 220,000 miles. Switch back to Motorcraft blend at 220,000.

I'll be running blend in my Freebie on my next change.

Vague. What does that mean? I switched to synthetic in my 02 F150 at ~110K miles when I got it. Didn't notice a change other than it went through a bit of oil, but I don't know how much it went through before I got it. For that matter I don't know if the previous owner used synthetic but that was highly unlikely considering the condition of the truck.

I would switch to full synthetic. In fact, I have been doing this on all of my vehicles for years regardless of mileage.

At what mileage do you change your oil now? If your concerned with money, I bet you could offset the minimal increase in oil price by adding mileage to your OCI. Currently I'm doing 10,000 OCI on my Freestyle. Blackstone suggested 12,000, but 10,000 is must easier to keep track of by the odometer, and ends up having me change it once a year (I do it during the summer when the weather is nicer).

MIne seemed to burn more oil and it leaked as well. When I switched back to syn-blend, it pretty much quit burning and has stopped leaking. I ran it (synthetic) for 2-3 oil changes, but just noticed the leak(s) so I swapped back to the Motorcraft and it seems to have helped.

Maybe it's placebo...but I like the MC better for my truck.

Also worth noting that I go 10,000 between changes...usually.

The problem with "synthetic blend" oil is that you are led to believe that it is a 50/50 blend of synthetic and conventional oil, but it's just marketing speak. There are no guarantees and no standards on what the blend ratio is. It could be 98% conventional and 2% synthetic. I have submitted my oils to analysis labs over the years and the 3000 mile oil change interval is a waste of money, perpetuated by companies that want to sell oil. As soon as I get a car, no matter the age, I put in Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil with a Mobil 1 filter. Because you can't get all the old oil out, I change it the first time after about 10-15k miles, but after that I change it only every 25-30k miles, with a filter change every 15k miles. I have been doing this for years on a wide variety of cars, many of which have gone to over 200k miles without any engine issues. It does seem that the full synthetic oils may tend to leak a little bit more. The specs for oil viscosity are very broad, so the synthetics could be lower in the range than the conventional oils, which could account for the difference. There are two big reasons to use a full synthetic: you have a turbocharger, or you live where winters are very cold. The third reason is for the long service life and low sludge forming characteristics of the full synthetic. So I always go for the full synthetic and put up with the slightly higher oil consumption. Indeed, if the oil consumption was high enough to start with due to worn rings, etc., (like 1 qt/3000 miles or more), then I never change the oil. I just spin on a new filter every 15k and be sure to keep the oil topped up to full. The extended life of the synthetic oils makes them cost equivalent to conventional oils with a shorter OCI, and the extended engine life is a big benefit to me since I run my cars until the wheels fall off.

Yowza!!! 25k between oil changes? I usually go 10-12k when I was on Mobil 1. I still do 10k on Motorcraft. But for me...25k is a little much. If it is working for you, more power to ya.

And again, good explanation.

I use the blend. Less drips from high mileage motors. I go 5,000 miles between changes. I believe that is appropriate...even on my Hybrid that Ford recommends 10,000 mile changes I am doing 5,000 mile changes.

Amazing... 25k is quite the awesome change interval!
