2008 Taurus X Engine Rattle

Post by mavman65 » Mon Mar 06, 2017 2:36 pm

I have a 2008 Taurus X, with 125,000 miles. For the last month or so I have had a rattle, that sounds like valve rattle coming from under the front hood. In the past, I would change gas stations or run with a higher octane, and the rattle would go away. Usually at the change of seasons here in the NorthEast I have the issue.

Now it is back, and regardless of gas or octane, the rattle is there. Usually it is after the car is warm, and the engine kicks down when moving and at a cruising speed, but i try to go a bit faster, say from 30 to 35 mph, no grade. It also happens when running at low rpms and beginning to go up a small hill. Until the tranny kicks up to a higher gear to accommodate the hill climb, the rattle is incessant. Plugs were changed not too long ago, and the oil was just changed. No overheating, no lights on the dash.

Anyone have any ideas? Thanking you all in advance...

Did you check to see if there are any codes stored?

Did the problem occure after or shortly after the plug change?

Sorry for the delay in responding. The rattle occurred at times before the change. I have not checked to see if there are any codes stored, I don't know how to do that. I can say that there were never any warning lights, beeps etc. I guess I can get a code reader off the internet, any suggestions?

If you own a smart phone, you can get a code reader that is an App for your phone. You just have to purchase the dongle the attaches your phone to the car's OBDII port.

I recently bought BlueDriver, it's quite awesome because it can do some advanced stuff on Fords. Worth a look: https://amzn.to/2n92TSw

The Foseal dongle https://amzn.to/2oRihle and Torque App on your smart phone is awesome. There are some custom CSV files that will let you look deeply into the PCM/ECU's parameters. More info and some more links here:

and on other forums.

Can you post a video so we can listen to your rattle? Our T-rex makes a little (valve train?) noise but it's done it since new. We had it into the dealership once and they couldn't even hear it. No codes.
