Radio Issue 2006 Freestyle

Postby rfm3 » Wed Feb 01, 2017 9:30 am

2006 Ford Freestyle with about 160K miles.

Suddenly, the radio reads Phone. Nothing else. There is no phone setup in vehicle, never has been. The only thing the phone/mute button would do is mute the sound. No controls on steering wheel. Single CD Player.

Checked the button to see if stuck. No
Unhooked battery cables and held the two cables to gether for about a minute and rehooked. No
Unhooked battery cables and left unhooked for a couple hours. No
Fiddling with any buttons, nothing
Fuses are fine, just that all it reads is Phone on the display and the clock.
Put a CD in and nothing, but it will eject.

So some further info is that a local dealership has seen various vehicles with same issue after around 100K miles or so, so they say.

My question is, is the radio just dead? Is there a way to bypass it and hook an AUX device to allow us to hook up to use the speakers?

Really not wanting to dump a lot of money if possible, we mainly use the CD Player on trips and an AUX into speakers would be fine.

The Freestyle radio is crazy easy to replace and can be had for less than $100 from a recycler.

Well I did pull the cover off and can see the radio and four bolts but not sure how the connectors come off. I am one of those types who gets into trouble trying to do the simple things

How does one make sure a recycler radio works?

For under $200 you can easily replace the stock stereo with a GPS touchscreen. Not alot of money and brings you into the 21st century.

I think the sub only comes on the Audiophile system.

You can buy a total refurbished unit with a new faceplate and a warranty on ebay for under 140 bucks. Got one for my last FS. Its a generic Ford Part used in all vehicle lines of that era

Look in the rear right (passenger side) cargo area. You'll see a speaker grill IF there is a subwoofer installed.

I believe the sub was only supplied with the Audiophile system on the Limited.

You can get this from Amazon Warehouse deals for less than $132.00

I have 2 of these, one in my work truck and 1 in the wifes Limited. So much better than stock.
