Emissions light on, knocking

Post by lillianbrejea » Mon Jan 23, 2017 5:04 pm

2006 freestyle awd limited
145500 miles, 1 owner, no problems but been surging lately. Then i took it for an oil change, and they changed the air filter also because they said itv was bad. I get home put it in park and notice a knocking sound. Then I drive to work the next day, 15 one way, put in park still knocking. The
next day the emissions light comes on and the knocking still there. If I put it in neutral and accelerate the knocking speeds up. Any advice, taking it to see if I can get it checked out on the computer tomorrow

Wow, find a more qualified mechanic and never return to where you took it to! Welcome to the site. Before you drive it again though, pull out the dipstick and make sure you have oil at the correct level.

First check the oil level. NEVER drive anything that knocks if you are a lay person. It is generally the sound of mechanical bits grenading.

Second call the shop immediately.

Third have it towed back and expect alot of denying and it was like that before routine. Don't accept it unless it truly was- which is a rarity.

Sound like you went to a quick lube place. Which generally are under skilled and over worked. Likley overfilled the crankcase or under filled it atop of leavine the MAF unplugged. Typical hack job at a quick lube. Make them DOCUMENT how over or underfilled the engine was .... if the engine is knocking its toast

I took my Bronco to a Quick lube place once. When they were finished and I payed and they pulled it out, I got in and started it and it was knocking. I raised the hood and the morons didn't put the oil cap back on. Well why should they be bothered with something so trivial? They failed to put oil in it too! Damn fools.

Meh...I wouldn't go so far as to say if it is knocking it is toast. If it is knocking after making certain the oil level is correct, THEN I would agree it's toast.

Knocking is the sound of metal on metal contact, and as the OP say they continued to drive it, that would make be believe its toast.

It may still operate but you have already made significant damage to the engine

I absolutely agree, if he has persisted in driving it while it was knocking due to no oil, the chances are high for internal damage to occur. If he got bad gas (low octane), that could also cause 'knocking'. As of yet, we don't know the reason as he hasn't replied back yet.

Well...1 1/2 months later. What was the final verdict?

I hate it when people just abandon threads.
