Replacement gas tank

Postby v8caterpillar » Sun Jan 22, 2017 8:48 am

Hubby and son are attempting to replace the fuel pump on my beloved 2005 Freestyle. They accessed it through the floor panel in under the back seat but the ring on top is really rusted and so far they've had no luck getting it off.
Any tips for getting it off (they are soaking it with penetrating oil)? And if they absolutely can't get it apart....does anyone make an aftermarket replacement tank? $650-700 for oem stings a little.

You will find that the prices from a salvage yard will be more attractive.

Yeah, local upullit has one for $50. I'm still hoping they get the old one apart. Until then, I get to drive hubby's baby...2007 F150.

Argh! Fuel pump is in, no tank replacement needed. Car still won't start. Hubby is a trucker and leaves in the morning for his next round. I have a week to come up with what to check next.
Suggestions?

Diagnose where the problem actually is. A lot of people replace the pump and find that wasn't the problem.

Fuses, relays, wiring and connectors are all things to test before condemning a pump. Also, check the fuel inertia switch to make sure it wasn't triggered.

First off, when you turn the key to on (but not start), do you hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds to prime?

Yes, it will crank but not start. I tried resetting the fuel cutoff switch.

Could be ALOT of issues..
1. a PATS issue, as the antitheft system inhibits fuel pump with an incorrect transponder signal.

2. Could be engine primary ignition, i.e. bad ckp cks sensors (crank or cam sensors or pcm)

3. Bad wiring anywhere in between.

4. Secondary ignition coils or plugs

5. Engine timming

6. Mechanical issues, lack of compression, damaged valves etc.

We/I can walk you through some tests

Progress. Reset the inertia switch and he got the car started. It takes a couple tries, will stall a couple times but will then idle nicely. The car will not go over 3000rpm when he revs it.
Thoughts?

If he is reving the engine in park or neutral he is hitting the engine speed limiter.

Reviving this thread to update. We have success at last!
To recap: Problem started when the car wouldn't start. We replaced the fuel pump and the car would start but wouldn't stay running and would run rough. Replaced the fuel pressure sensor and it got a little better then changed the fuel filter and it would start and idle but the rpms would fall when the car was idling, the engine would surge when shifting gears and it would stall out if I was going very slowly. I drove like that for a week but when it stalled out while I was driving home from work, I limped back to work, parked it and had my son come pick me up.Finally, Hubby and Son cleaned the throttle body and mass air flow sensor this morning. Car is now running like a top.
Thanks to everyone for the help and suggestions!!!

Good to hear! Friend of mine had a Blazer years ago, we soaked that thing in pb blaster for 2 solid days before the rust ring on top gave way to give access to the fuel pump... and that's with dropping the tank.
