to keep or not? 2005 Ford Freestyle SE 65,775 miles

Post by suzannebonin » Wed Nov 20, 2019 10:37 pm

To fellow lovers of it please help me decide whether I should trade it in and if so for what?
I purchased it new July, 2005 and has been the best auto yet (64 yrs I am). My concern is running into large ongoing repair costs and kicking myself for not trading it in while it still holds some value. The differential I had fixed 5 yrs ago and less than 2 yrs ago had rocker panels and a wheel well replaced, undercoated annually since too (do I love this car? LOL). Having owned this for over 14 1/2 yrs this seems reasonable though concerned about future expenses. What to expect? To pass inspection this month it needed a $14.98 directional lamp. Truly a great car! Any input will be appreciated. Suzanne

Ford doesn’t build them like that anymore. If you like it and are willing to keep it, do that. Repairs typically are a lot cheaper than buying a new car. I think you’d find the value of your car surprisingly low due to its age, even with the low mileage.

God love you! I really would like to keep it going indefinitely and judging by the mileage many manage I should be able to also with keeping the basic maintenance schedule. The dealership I purchased it from gave me an estimate of 3500-4089 trade in value with their retail between 6100-6995. Worth much more to me and simple things like the comfortable seats, etc. I once had a 10' sit in kayak in the cabin stern beside between bucket seats for months before I got the proper rooftop rack and cradles. Many police saw me driving that way and didn't bother me- though I wouldn't recommend! Oh and the cargo space ahhhh.

Keep up on the maintenance and you will do fine.
Drove an 06 LTD FWD from July 08 to August 10, moved on to a 2011 Flex

Keep it. You already stated that it is worth more to you than what you'd get on trade in. I always look at it like this, I typically buy used cars in the $10k-12k range, putting my monthly payments around $200/mo. So for $2400 a year I'm in a car that I don't own, still need to perform and pay for maintenance on, as well as repairs.

You've got a known problem set with your FS. Which for yours, has been nearly no problems at all. It's (presumably) paid for. So what sort of repairs could you do for the equivalent of $2400/year? In just over two years' time, if you set that same amount aside, you'd have a car repair savings fund of nearly $5000. Not much can come up repair-wise to drain that account in one go except for a catastrophic engine or transmission failure. Which, if you're keeping up on maintenance, is a low probability.

At this point, the vehicle has done it's job admirably. I don't feel it "owes" you anything... so every year you get with it trouble-free is a blessing, and what I'd expect. I wouldn't foresee a well taken care of vehicle like this to have any failures soon. Obviously no one has a crystal ball to know that for sure.

But I'd keep it, especially if you love everything about it, it does everything you need, and does it well. Not all newer vehicles can do that.

Mine is an '05 and has 137K miles on it and is still going strong. Granted, I could have an anomaly, but I would say keep it. My only complaints are not seeing the computer readout lights in the bright daytime and a broken seatbelt in the middle seat.

I would recommend if you haven't done it yet with 65,775 a transmission fluid change ( Motorcraft CVT fluid only. I just had my done with 160,000 its recommend that this get done ever 40-50k.

Like any vehicle the Freestyle still needs some maintenance its a will build vehicle ahead of
its time when released back on 05.

My mechanic recommended only doing a drain and fill of fluid and not replacing any of the filters his option was if it isn't broke leave it alone.

My transmission was just fine so I didn't want to open a can of warms by doing the filters.

It's up to you I just air on the side of caution.

05 AWD SEL with 162,000 bought it with 88k did transmission fluid change at 150,000 also when I bought it started doing full synthetic oil and using only motorcraft oil filter had issues with other filters displaying oil light when car would sit overnight.

With the motorcraft filter no longer having this happen. The freestyle seems to do great with genuine motorcraft parts, I did struts during the summer and went with motorcraft couldn't be happier also new set of Cooper CS5 grand touring tires 80k Freestyle is reborn.

Can anyone tell me more about this "undercoating"?

What is it and should I have it done to my 12 years old Freestyle too?

If the undercoating is a rubber based product, stay away, stay far away. It will destroy your vehicle far worse than if you had done nothing. Hopefully it's an oil-wax based product.
