2005 Ford Freestyle limited oil change frequency
2005 Ford Freestyle limited oil change frequency
Hi
I was wondering how often should the oil be changed on a 2005 Freestyle? We had it changed in 11/2018 and the car is saying 0% oil ....time to change. Is this normal? Not too soon?

How many miles have you put on since the last oil change? The owners guide calls for 5,000 mile intervals.
Was the oil life monitor reset at the last oil change? See viewtopic.php?t=3356 - if it was not reset when the oil was changed the message you see now may be erroneous.

Re: 2005 Ford Freestyle limited oil change frequency
OK So we do not think it was reset and he reset it now. So now we are off track? Or does it actually read oil %?
Re: 2005 Ford Freestyle limited oil change frequency
You should focus on the actual miles driven since the last change. Do not rely on the electronic readout at this point.
Re: 2005 Ford Freestyle limited oil change frequency
OK will do Thank you. From there we can reset it again and be on track.
Re: 2005 Ford Freestyle limited oil change frequency
Yes, reset it at the next oil change.
Re: 2005 Ford Freestyle limited oil change frequency
The oil change frequency is pre-programmed for 5,000 miles driven, if you like me I use
synthetic oil and go about 7,000 miles between oil changes.
Switching over to Full Synthetic oil is the way to go.

Yes, we use synthetic too. So we should go to 7000 before oil change?
Re: 2005 Ford Freestyle limited oil change frequency
You could go 7000, but use a good oil filter that is advertised for use with extended mileage between oil changes. If you change oil at home and already have bought and used a 3000 mile oil filter, at 3500 +/- miles, just change the oil filter, catching the oil that runs out when removing the used oil filter in a new clean disposable alum. pan, and then add the oil you caught back in. Make sure the caught oil is not contaminated with crud that might fall off the outside of the filter or the bottom of the engine etc. If you have extra synthetic, you can catch old filter oil, and put in new oil, and dispose of the 1/4 qt of used oil that runs out into the catch pan.
Re: 2005 Ford Freestyle limited oil change frequency
If you're using a Motorcraft oil filter you shouldn't need to mess around with changing the filter at the halfway mark.
You could potentially go way past 7,000 miles but you would want to do an oil analysis such as https://www.blackstone-labs.com/tests/s ... -analysis/ to tell you how much life is left in the oil at that point.
I would only recommend running a full synthetic, not a synthetic blend if you want to do extended drain intervals.

I found that the procedure in the book is confusing. Even my mechanic can't do it right. I have to do it from my notes otherwise it doesn't work. The instructions are accurate just missing how things are done.
