Intermittent p0701 HELP! 2006 ford five hundred AWD

Post by MrBugatti » Mon Jan 21, 2019 2:07 pm

Well the funny thing is that I'm normally on this forum helping other people but now I need help from you guys. Just as a little background I'm 15 and this is my moms car we bought it used in 2010 with 68,000 miles on it now almost 9 years later it has 210,000 miles just so you know up front I changed the tranny fluid in June of 2018 (with the motorcraft cvt chain type transmission fluid) and pan filter (with an aftermarket one) were changed at 199,000 miles I did not change the high pressure filter because at the time it was just too involved and I really did not want to mess with the 13 year old engine mounts which I'm going to change soon, speaking of engine mounts and getting to the point not too long ago in like September 2018 I was jacking up the engine to attempt to replace the front engine mount until I remembered and figured out that you have to drop the exhaust or oil filter so I let the engine back down and just put the car back on the ground then 2 days later I get in the car with my dad and pull out of the driveway to see that the wrench light is on and the car wouldn't go over 20 mph so I thought that was the end of our five hundred but out of desperation I shut It off cleared the codes (p0701) and it then drove perfectly fine fast forwarding 2 months it happened again we shut it off and restarted it and then it was fine going back to when I changed the tranny fluid when I initially started it I got a p0701 then It went away. I noticed a couple months ago that the radio interference capacitor wire was damaged probably when I jacked the engine up could this be my issue or is it just a coincidence ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED

Could the damaged radio interference capacitor wire cause this because it only really started happening after the wire got damaged

I had issue in the past only when temp got below 30F. I pulled the trans pan and the filter was not seated properly. Dropped to ground when pulled the pan. Put new filter in and made sure was seated.

When I had issue, If warmed up the car then turned off and restarted the codes would go away.

Thanks for the reply Because I've been worried that the trans was toast and my mom kinda needs it to get to work. before I pull the pan which was a pain last time I'm going to fix that capacitor wire that I damaged before I spend another $100 on more fluid one thing I'm definitely not doing is using a aftermarket filter again and I'm planning on changing the engine mounts when I do the oil change and I do the high pressure filter just for reference this is the filter I used https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001F ... That is your problem.... Need motorcraft filter... Which is the oem filter.... Others on here had issue when not using the oem filter. Could drain the fluid and filter fluid through a white t-shirt to get any debree out. Sounds like you have fresh fluid in it. Rockauto was cheapest for the oem fluid when I last checked ford dealer was $10 and went to $30 quart! Changed mine about 6 months ago. I dont mess with the filters... I just change the fluid after previous issue with filter.

Yeah after this I probably will just leave the filters alone. luckily I only need like two or three quarts because I initially bought a 12 qt case from ford for $240 which is insane but with 210,000 miles after this were probably just going to do oil changes and just ride it out until she doesn't want to go anymore. Overall she has served us well we've driven 142,000 miles on her since 2010 we bought it for around $12,000 in 2010

Hey, for future reference the ford five hundred also came with 6 speed trans which you can find used ones for around $350. 6 speed was on 2 wheel drive. So if went to 6 speed would only have 2 wheel drive. When I called around trans shop charge about $500 to swap out trans.(only called 1 shop). So may be worth looking at down the road?

By the way... Keep up the good work... I'm sure your mother really appreciates everything you are doing.

So the HP filter has never been changed? If not you should get on that - replacing the HP filter is more important than the pan filter. We have had 3 Freestyles in the past (still have 2) and on all of them I never changed the pan filter but I changed the HP filter and fluid every 50k miles.

Yeah I'm planing on changing the hp filter when I put in the new motor mounts and do the oil change and do the trans fluid again so I'm just waiting for a long weekend where I'll have time it's a shame because the tranny fluid only has 10k on it

You only have to remove the trans mount to do the HP filter. Just support the trans on the left side with a jack while you do the HP filter change.

Just as a follow up I just changed the oil and the front and back engine mounts and I already did both roll restrictors I still haven't changed the one on the transmission just trying to let my mom choose if its worth it to change the trans fluid and filter again
