Preferred suspension parts

Post by Gator417 » Wed May 31, 2017 2:21 am

Just about to replace the shocks and struts on my '06 awd and I am curious if there is a particular brand or type that is preferred, by a general concensus. I usually get those types of things from Rock Auto and their choices are Motorcraft, KYB, Gabriel and Sachs. I'm doing 4 at once, or within a weekend of each other & would like a matched set.
Secondary; what other parts must I have to do this right (strut mount, bearing etc)?

I have been using KYB since the 80s, still like 'em.

Thanks Jas. I figure you can't go wrong with any of the above, but usually folks on a forum will gravitate towards a particular setup. Either way, it will have to wait a bit since my alt (I think) went TU today.

My opinion Gabriel are not as good compared to Monroe. Replaced with Monroe on my freestyle and Gabriel on my wife's. Wife drove my freestyle and said why does your freestyle have smoother ride than mine..... Well..... both had Gabriel on the rear...

Monroe doesn't give you the bumper and boot with strut. They released new model number strut and decided to sell these as separate parts to get another $20 out of you. Previous model strut these parts were included. I replaced one of the Gabriel struts on my wife's as it was failing and found bumper split when got apart. Replaced with Monroe. Instead of giving Monroe the $20 I bought Kyb kit for $20.

Just need strut mounts or also called strut bearing on front. Rear don't need new mounts. May want to replace sway bars since got apart. Also control arms? If think they may going... just replaced mine as the rubber was broken and quite a bit of movement. Mine where original to car with 173,000 miles on them. I buy parts from am auto parts and have had good luck with them. Here is link to control arms if interested for control arms, I have also bought rotors, wheel bearings, headlights, and tie rods. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Front-Lower-Con ... 8E&vxp=mtr

Thanks Dan.
I did some more digging and price checking and ended up buying Motorcraft for all 4 corners. They were about the same price as the others on Rock Auto & I've always been happy with MC parts. I will be sure to report back my findings after driving with them for a bit.

More importantly, reply back with how much you enjoyed installing the rear struts.

Don't make plans for the day you do the rear. They're gonna take you awhile.
