Freestyle 2005 limited AC blowing cold on drivers side and rear, 10-15 deg warmer on passangers side

Hi,

Im in a little dilemma with my Freestyle (full climate control front and back). I have an issue with the passenger side ac blowing warmer air than all the other vents. I also believe over time my flow of air has reduced coming into the cabin. I have taken it into the Ford garage spent over $2000 on a new compressor and which has made it cooler but Ford are scratching their head with what is happening with the temperature differential. They are telling me everything checks out ok but the next stage is to remove the dash and check the heater core plenum? Ford have said they would do me a deal to take it out to see what is wrong. The offer is they want $800 to remove dash and check it out and that would hopefully cover any parts which may be required to fix it. However he also said they may not find anything so it could be a waste of time and cannot guarantee finding the problem.

I guess i'm wondering is this a good deal and if anyone has had the same issues which were similar and fixed by this outcome? after all I don't want to pay money for a "we may find a problem!"

So I have also been running probable causes through my head and have come up with this, is it plausible?

My Freestyle does not have a cabin filter so called, just a plastic gauze which may allow debris to enter the the blower motor. Tiny bits of leaf or plant life dirt etc etc(parking under trees etc?). My theory is that if this is the case it could potentially build up in front of the evaporator over time, blocking the air traveling through it. On top of that the condensation constantly building up on the evaporator the debris is also becoming moist and is sticking permanently on evaporator core? The only reason I can think of why it is only happening on the passenger side is that the blower is mounted on the passenger side. As it blows through to the evaporator it must drive the air around a bend causing higher pressure on the driver side of the evaporator and lower on the passenger side. I am thinking that the passenger side with it being a lower pressure would be where all this outside debris can build and become increasingly blocked over time?.

Could this theoretically happen in these cars with no filter?

Any help will be most greatfull

James

Hello,

I know this is months late , I wanted to ask what you found out about your issue. I have a 2008 TRex Limited AWD that is dong the same thing . I did my research and I replaced 3 of the actuator's 2 on drivers side and 1 right when you take glove box off. I still have the problem and now I am being told there is one that specifically controls climate control and blend that is located on passenger side when remove airbag to the left. Any knowledge of this? This was the hardest job I have ever tackled the whole dash has to be disassembled to get to the upper actuator on driver side replaced. I dint think I want to tackle this again and was wondering if you could advise if dealership fixed the issues, what it was and how much?
Thanks
Kim

Hi, sorry I have not logged in for a time! Anyway, Ford took the dash out, fixed a couple seals flushed all AC lines and put it all back together. It is better but still not like it was. I think the evaporator core is coated with oil inside which will not flush out(system was un charged for a while oil residue congealed inside evaporator). If I had the chance again to take the dash out I would change the evaporator core for new. $100 at the time. moral of the story, AC breaks get it fixed asap!

My '05 has this temp differential too. I had the system charged last summer and it was better (but, by no means good) for a while, then it was back to the same thing. I then tried to charge it myself with one of those bottle/gauge/hose-thingies from autozone, only to find it was already way overcharged! I gave up and left it alone at that point.

If you are getting different temperatures then I would suspect a bad blend door actuator.

Oh...forgot to mention. We checked that too. It appears to be working correctly.

Marcus I think the evaporator cores need changing. In the dash and back, and flush the ac lines while they are out. Its the only thing I never done. You could also check for leaks. I believe half the evaporator core in the front is blocked. If you remove then let me know please how it turned out!

So the lastest update. I got a mechanic to suck out the ac system and vacuum it for 30mins. It showed no leaks on the computer. We changed the scroll valve and filter and refilled to 2.6 pounds I think (it states under the hood). Now the front works great and the rear(Aux) is bad. To me it seems to be a partial blockage in the aux system now. With the blockage now in the back I intend to relieve the the pressure and break the lines in the back to remove probably a piece of broken compressor! Not this year though! At least it is not at the DASHBOARD now....!
