Fuel gauage not registering when the fuel tank is full

Post by tduplaga » Sun Jun 05, 2016 12:53 pm

I have an '06 freestyle. I filled the tank , but the fuel gauge is only showing 3/4 full. Thought the tank wasn't full, but it was. Fuel tank was not venting properly. It would click off the nozzle.
Any suggestions on what I need to check?
Thanks

Hi, Just thought I would say that I also have an issue in which the fuel gauge registers wrong for some reason. In fact the first time it had done it I had just filled up with fuel with no difference in fuel gauge position!. I ended up going into the garage to ask if the pump was pumping correctly. I have no idea why it does this. I do believe it is related to heat in my case. I have only had it happen when the temperature has been over 100 degs. It probably last happened a few months ago.

It will not register correctly, for some reason, if the key is left on during fueling.

So if the keys are left in the ignition it will upset the fuel gauge WOW! Thanks

No, not left in the ignition but in the "on" position like you might do to listen to the radio while fueling.

It will not register correctly, for some reason, if the key is left on during fueling.
It will eventually register correctly, it's just going to take several miles (like 10-15) for it to do so. This was explained elsewhere on this forum:

When I fill ours up, if it is over filled, it will register 3/4 (or less) until the gas level goes down a bit. I don't keep filling any more after the pump clicks the handle off and no issues. Gauge registers just fine. Nothing to worry about. Has done this for years.

Mine does the same thing. If I keep trying to pump gas in after it clicks off (like I usually do) it will cause the fuel gauge to read low for a while. As far as leaving the car running (or the key in the "on" position) while pumping gas that seems to always cause the gauge to not register the new fuel level for a while on just about every car I can recall...

By the way, has anyone got the advertised 19 gallons out of a full tank? I tend to sputter and die around 18.5-18.75. The way I top off the tank at the pumps I would suspect I'd get over the advertised 19 gallons...

Guess you would need to run it dry to do that, but don't as it's hard on the fuel pump.
