2006 Ford Freestyle Headlight Adjustment

Post by jas88 » Fri Oct 10, 2014 2:58 pm

The headlights on my FS are too low. It was not readily apparrant to me how to adjust them, so I consulted the factory Ford service manual. Thru what I guess is an oversight, the manual goes thru about 3 pages explaining how to measure the aim of the headlights, but it never says how to adjust them if the aim is not right. Mystery solved - there is a silver bolt on the back of the headlight assy. with teeth on it (which I thought was to lock it in place, but on mine, they don't seem to do anything). It's an 8mm bolt, but on mine, I could turn it by hand. Clockwise raises the beam up.

Hope this helps someone.

You missed this,
5. Locate the vertical adjuster on
each headlamp. Using a Phillips #2
screwdriver, turn the adjuster either
clockwise (to adjust down) or
counterclockwise (to adjust up).
The horizontal edge of the brighter
light should touch the horizontal
reference line
The "teeth" are what the Phillips blades grip to turn the screw. There is a drawing but your picture shows it better!

Thanks, mmsstar! That is a very clever arrangement. Where in the manual did you find that? In what section and page nbr?

I am referring to Section 417-01 pages 88-90 in the Ford manual, and I don't see that reference you noted. The section I am on is titled "Headlight Adjustment".

Since I had a 2006 "Style, that is the manual I have saved. It's the 2nd printing, in the "Lights" section on page 55.

Service Manual? Or Owner's Manual?

Oh, I never thought of looking there, you would think it would be in the Service Manual as well. Thanks again for the tip.

OK so I had to replace both headlights because my FS hit a deer. I used the screwdriver to adjust per the proper procedure. It's too slow. You spin and spin the screwdriver and you get VERY slow movement, so slow it's hard to tell if you are doing anything or going the right way. I ended up reaching in there with my hand and turning the adjuster like I had done before, it's much faster that way.

OK...got the vertical adjustment fine...but where is the horizontal? I had to replace a headlight housing and that's the only adjustment I need to make.

There is no horizontal adjustment, only the vertical!
