Here is an excerpt:
Safety Recall 05S37 - 2005 Ford Five Hundred, Montego, and Freestyle

Description: Certain 2005 Model Year Five Hundred, Montego, and Freestyle Vehicles - Fuel Tank Strap Replacement

November 9,2005

There is a safety recall on certain 2005 model year Ford Five Hundred, Freestyle, and Mercury Montego vehicles regarding the fuel tank straps.
Affected Vehicles

2005 Ford Five Hundred, 2005 Mercury Montego, and 2005 Ford Freestyles built at the Chicago Assembly Plant between January 3,2005 and June 21,2005.
Reason For The Recall

The fuel tank straps may break at higher mileages, potentially resulting in the fuel tank and fuel tank heat shield dropping on the exhaust system (FWD vehicles) or driveshaft (AWD vehicles). If the fuel tank and shield contact the exhaust or driveshaft, the driver may notice noise or a fuel leak. A fuel leak inthe presence of an ignition source may result in a fire.
Owner Notification

Owners of affected vehicles will be notified the week of November 28, 2005, when it is anticipated that there will be enough parts available to allow open ordering. Dealers should repair any affected vehicle that arrives at theirdealership, whether or not the customer has received a letter.

Found this on USA today website :

The company's investigation found that the manufacturer of the strap changed to a weaker grade of steel in December 2004 that could not meet Ford's durability requirements. Ford declined to disclose the supplier's identity.

At mileage levels of 100,000 and more, the automaker was concerned the strap would separate and cause the fuel tank to drop. Most 2005 vehicles would not likely have approached those mileage levels yet, but "it's still not a risk that we want to take," Ford spokeswoman Kristen Kinley said.

Ford's problem has a lot to do with their beancounter mentality to put pressure on their suppliers to cut costs.

FYI, if you follow the link I posted above, you can type in your VIN and see if you're affected instantly.

I wonder was this gas tank strap problem relate to my Freestyle.

I know, I have a 2007 AWD. But recently there is an unidentifiable light rattle(vibration) sounded like coming from somewhere at the third row. The dealer couldn't find it, but performed grease and maintenance on the 2nd row seats.

The rattling(vibration) does not happen all the time. Usually after driven on rough roads like NYC. When passengers sat in the 2nd row, not even one rattle could be heard.

Will have the dealer check everything under the vehicle next time going for an oil change!

Has anyone noticed this is the recall from 11/9/05? If you were notified at that time and had the work done, don't worry about this.

The link is over 5 years old man. I don't know what to do. Maybe browse around www.ford.com to find where to put in your VIN. Or just call them with your VIN.
