External temperature sensor for thermostat running hot

Post by DarkwingBuck » Mon Oct 16, 2017 1:30 pm

When I drive my Freestyle above 50 mph, the external temperature sensor will start to get incredibly hot, getting up to 127 degrees. Naturally, this makes the AC go on full blast, even on cooler days.

After turning off the engine for a while (~20 minutes), the temperature drops.

The temperature outside during both of these pictures was 61 degrees.

That is an excellent question. The manual says it is at the "base of the windshield" but I could not find it.

I thought I read it was up front by the grill.

This is not an exact location; mmsstar is correct, per the Ford Parts website diagram it is located in the left front...

Its behind the front grill. Appears you just need to replace the sensor. 2 bolts and push pins on top grill where hood shuts then grill should pull straight up and out to give you access to replace. Sensor goes through metal bracket with sheet metal nut. Wrench access may be difficult from what I remember.

This should not make the a/c go full blast, tho. The a/c system is in charge of the temp INSIDE the car - it doesn't care how hot or cold it is outside.
