Try replacing the control valve, which is located on the back of the a/c compressor.

The part is about $35 and can be purchased from RockAuto, or from Amazon. You will need to to evacuate the system of freon. Then, all it tracks is a 10mm wrench and 10 minutes of your time. Recommend that you wait to swap it when the engine is cold. The valve is located next to the front exhaust manifold and access is tight.

Once you change the valve, you'll need to have someone draw a vacuum on the system for at least an hour and then recharge the freon. Normally, this should give you nice cold air. If not, then you may have other issues, such as a partially clogged orifice.

I hope this helps you.

Yes, control valve. Some with this problem have advised to leave the control valve in, but either put a 1/4 inch thick nut in between the back of the C V, and the plate, or remove the C V and the spring that is in front of the C V, and put the C V in first and then the spring and the plate. Ive not seen any postings where someone has done that and it didnt work, but maybe the poster is the only one who did it either way, and it worked just for them.

The C V is supposed to move back and forth in the compressor, and save some tiny amount of fuel when driving, > some engineers bright idea. When the C V gets dirty, or the area it slides in gets dirty, and the C V doesnt move, then warmer AC air at idle. With the expense of having a shop recover the freon, and then pull a vacuum and put freon back in, why not put in a new C V. If it was me, I would buy the cheapest C V valve, take it to a AC shop and have them do the work, and do one of the mods above, and not worry about the C V valve getting dirty or clogged, and having the same problem again at some future time. I think the fuel savings from having a C V that can slide like the engineer wanted, is very small, compared to the idea that it never can get to a condition where it will no longer slide, and warmer air at idle again. Either mod will keep the C V where it needs to be to always have cold AC air.

Either way, replacing the o-ring gasket that seals the plate on the back of the compressor with the one that come with the new C V, or with a gasket you buy, if you do the nut or spring mod is a good idea. It looks a little flat after one use, and can leak, after the fix.

Hi BillRod,

The forum thread below outlines some of the specifics around replacing the scroll/compressor control value:

viewtopic.php?t=4329

If you do a forum, or even Google, search you will find plenty of additional information. There several videos on YouTube as well.

Based on the symptoms, yours problem certainly sounds like the control valve.

The Freestyle is also known for leaking PAG oil from the compressor housing, which in-turn results in no/low cooling. If your Freestyle has this issue, you will see PAG oil on the right front lower radiator support (I believe, it may just be a sub-frame cross member). You will see it straight away if you slide under the right front. There is an excellent video on YouTube by "FordTechMakuloco" on how to swap out the compressor.

Did this and works great now. You guys are awesome!
