Speedometer Showing Faster Then Actual Speed

Post by Scotty17 » Fri Jan 06, 2017 8:59 am

I am seeing an issue on my 2005 Freestyle AWD with the Speedometer Showing Faster Then Actual Speed by 5 MPH. I proved this my comparing my Speedometer to the speed being displayed on my Garmin GPS. In the past with other cars the Garmin would always displayed and match the Speedometer.

I was told that this is as designed by Ford I guess to stop you from getting speeding tickets

Anyone else seeing this issue.

Thanks !!

It could also be effected if you have different sized tires than what came from the factory.

I've seen on all of my vehicles the speedo reads 1-3 mph too fast. I know at least 1 mph is by design.

Mine is a bit fast too ..... which makes sense in a way.......
A speedometer must be manufactured to a specific range of accuracy (+/- 3%?). Manufactures of vehicles will generally set their vehicles to see the upper limit. This will prevent legal action from owners who thought they were driving at the legal speed when they got their ticket!
If you think this is far fetched just wait until speed cameras come to your home town!!!!!

Best regards

We have those "your speed is..." signs in my city and I tweeted the police to ask if they were accurate and they said they were dead on. So I can verify my speedo against what is essentially a police radar.

I suspect part of the reason for speedos being high is because as tires wear down your speed goes a tiny bit faster.

Interestingly, use a scan tool to see the actual speed the car sees. I bet it will be a bit slower than what the speedo displays. I've seen that before too. In fact, my non-Ford car has both a digital speed display and speedo. The speedo reads about 3 km/h too fast but the digital readout is dead-on (it's a Jag).

Haven't checked the FS, but my Escape is 1-2 slower than actual according to Torque app and 2 different GPS used at the same time.

Every car and motorcycle I have ever owned had the same "optomistic" speedometer. Some more than others, but anywhere from 3-7mph seems to be the norm for what I have experienced.

Speedometer intermittently gets stuck at 40mph

Post by Scotty17 » Mon Mar 13, 2017 10:19 pm

2005 sel AWD

When driving at highway speeds 65-70 intermittently I have noticed that the speedometer doesn't go higher then 40-45 mpH

Does anyone know what might be causing this again it's very intermediate.

Thanks. .

Well, it's a Ford. Soooooooooooooooooo...............OK. Just kidding. I have 2 Ford's and love em.

1) Get up to speed again and try tapping the speedo gauge housing. Maybe it's just 'hung up'.
2) Maybe you have a bad speed sensor in one of your wheels.
3) SPIDER!!! I read in a motorcycle forum that a man was experiencing the same issue. His speedo wouldn't go past 30. HE ended up taking the housing apart and found a spider web attached to the needle. He said he couldn't see it while driving but when he got it apart he found it. Pretty funny actually.
4) I'm pretty sure this method works on the FS too. It would let you know if the speedo is working. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RlXNIxPtwA

I copied this from a Mustang forum.

"Since about the 2000 model year, Ford has incorporated a handy feature into most of their vehicles, including the Escape. It is a digital self-diagnostics mode that uses the odometer display & instrument cluster to show vehicle information.

Insert the key into the ignition switch but don't turn it (just slide it in).
Press & hold the odometer trip/reset button.
Turn the key to the accessory position while continuing to press the button, but don't start the car.
(alternatively, you can go ahead & start the car while pressing the button. I do it w the car off first, then w the car on).
The odometer display will change to something that looks like tESt in an LCD font.
Release the button when tESt appears.
When you release the button, the display changes to GAGE & the gauges will sweep to their maximum positions,
then return to their starting points.
Push & release the button to cycle thru the 50 or so different display modes.

Included in the list are battery voltage, engine rpms & coolant temperature.

If you chose to access the diagnostics mode without starting the engine, you can go ahead & start the car at any time and continue to cycle thru the various display modes: this would be handy for checking the battery (Engine-OFF/Engine-ON) & to verify that the alternator is charging it. Something you could try is to turn on all of the electrical accessories to see how well the alternator keeps up (hi-beams, wipers, rear wiper, A/C, etc.) Also, if the car seems to have an erratic idle, you can see the actual rpms displayed; go ahead & rev the engine to see a higher rpm. You could also check the engine/coolant temperature - engine OFF or engine ON. Just some neat stuff to goof around with that may provide some useful info."

When I went from 17" to 18" wheels on my Flex, I wanted to see if the speedo was going to be off so I dusted off my old Garmin and ran it to compare the speed readings. At 50 I was about 1 mph faster than the speedo was reading.

Yeah. But he's talking 20-25 mph and it won't go any faster. I don't think it's the tires.

BTW...isn't this in the EXTERIOR section of the forum? Wouldn't the speedo be INTERIOR? Unless you're on a motorcycle. Ha!
