Rear diff is impossible to remove.

Post by 1984ranger » Sun Nov 03, 2019 12:10 pm

Hi, I'm currently in the middle of replacing the rear diff on a 2006 Ford Freestyle, I've got everything disconnected and out of the way except the sway bar. Is there any way to remove the rear diff without completely taking out the sway bar? There is no information on how to do this, so any help is appreciated.

Do you own a service manual? The first step, on page 205-02-08, says remove the rear subframe assembly. Have you done that?

We did get the diff out without dropping the rear sub frame. To get the sway bar out, you take the lower coilovers bolts out and that gives you just enough room to get the sway bar completely out.

FSM 205-02-8, Rear axle removal.

The Freestyle specifically states to remove the rear anti-sway bar. It looks like on the Five Hundred/Montego, we can get away with just undoing the endlinks and positioning the bar forward, out of the way.

@jas88 I did not see in my manual where it states to remove the rear subframe assembly. Only halfshafts, muffler and tailpipe assembly, rear wheel speed sensor connectors, the DEM connector, then it hits the section on the sway bar.
