Oil Filter Too Big?

First time post...& first time I attempted to do an oil change on my sisters 2005 Freestyle AWD....key word being "attempted!" According to official Ford website...& the sites of EVERY auto parts store, the correct oil filter is Motorcraft #FL-820S. Well, after purchasing this filter, & draining oil, I look at the filter that's on the vehicle now, & it's way smaller than the FL-820S! I returned filter to Pep Boys. They cross-checked with VIN & same # comes up. What gives?! :(

You should have put it on. Obviously the smaller filter isn't doing as good of a job. What brand and part number is the small filter?

820S. Definitely the right filter. Same one on my 2007 AWD Limited...and my 2002 F150 coincidentally.

It wouldn't have worked. The diameter of the 820S is too wide. If it was just the length, it wouldn't be a problem. The small filter is some generic pos installed my some local garage no longer here.

No, didn't want to remove it before I got proper size. It was obvious it was too wide.

And you cannot conceive that someone else put the wrong filter on? 820S is the correct filter.

Yes, I can conceive that. What I cannot conceive is installing a filter that is 5" in diameter on a base that is 3 1/2". It would be very messy....not to mention using a qt. of oil every 5 minutes

Compare the mating surfaces, oil gasket diameter, etc. and not just the case size.

Yes, that's what I did.

Strange. Is it possible the engine is not original or correct for the vehicle? Should have posted a picture side by side with the two filters so we can see... hindsight is 20/20.... If you have the right engine, the FL820S will work.

I had valvoline do an oil change on my wife's Freestyle years ago (winter and I didn't feel like changing it in the detached garage.) Once spring came around, I changed the oil and the filter was what you described - VERY small. I have pictures somewhere, but it had to be about 3/4 the size of the FL-820S.

If you look at the gasket on the FL-820S and the pep boys filter, you'll see they line up exactly - otherwise you'd have a huge oil leak right now. The FL-820S gasket sits inside about an inch, so the filter case hangs over the edge of the mating surfaces.

You are correct! Really didn't look like it would. Went back to auto parts store & purchased the FL820S...again. Here are pics of the little filter that was installed previously compared to the 820S I just installed.
Thank you!

You're right! Thanks!
