Oil pan gasket removal question

Post by YellowJacket » Mon May 15, 2017 11:07 am

Can anyone tell me if replacing the oil pan gasket is an easy job? From looking at the engine schematic I want to make sure pulling the oil pan does not first require pulling the engine front cover, which would be a lot more involved. It looks like several bolts may pass through the lower part of the engine front cover into the end of the oil pan. Do I just need to loosen them without disturbing the front cover, then loosen the oil pan bolts to remove it? Also, will the oil pan gasket require any sealant, or just straight removal and replacement? Thanks in advance.

I just got a DVD with the manual. It's not possible (at least to me) to copy and paste from it so hope these screen shots look OK. I wouldn't call it easy as you have to remove the catalytic converter so expect bolts to be rusted/stuck. However I wouldn't call it too difficult. Good luck

I know if its anything like the transmission oil pan the gasket itself is not something easily taken off. When I changed the cvt fluid and pan filter and high pressure filter I thought I was going to end up totally messing up the CVT transmission itself. The reason being that the gasket would not come off, even with gasket remover put on it and let sit. I had to scrap it off with a razor and then had to make the raised part of the pan where the gasket went got gouged ion some places. So I ended up going to a junk yard and getting a pan off a car there. Then it was easy. So if you do this, please make sure to be patient getting that gasket off. Or you'll be going to get a new pan somewhere.

Just curious. Why are you changing the oil pan gasket in the first place?
