Mechatronics unit

Post by ljhg » Fri Jan 13, 2017 10:15 am

My 05 Freestyle has been at the dealer for over a month waiting for them to find a mechatronics unit to replace the one that they say is causing the check transmission message to come on. There was absolutely no problem with the transmission before I took the car in to have an oil leak repair. When they returned the vehicle, it was missing so badly that I couldn't even get out of the parking lot. They then replaced a supposedly bad coil pack. The next day, the check transmission light came on. I took it back to them and they kept it several days, stating that they found nothing wrong, but had reprogrammed the TCM. Now the car is undrivable. I towed it to them, and they spent a week diagnosing the problem and now claim they cannot get the mechatronics part that they think needs to be replaced.
Where does someone find this part? I see people are still claiming they are replacing the one in their vehicle, so the part must be out there somewhere.

You said the transmission light is on and the car is undrivable. What other symptoms are you seeing? Any diagnostic codes? How did the garage come to the conclusion that the mechatronics unit is bad?

Mechatronics unit is available new. But it's pricey, 17 years in the dealership service biz lastly as a foreman and I smell a rat on this one.

They likley fouled and bodgered something up during the oil leak repair. They misdiagnosed it at first (coil pack) and then tried to convience you nothing is wrong....until it went really sideways.

Either that or they cooked the mech. Unit reflashing it. Either way they are trying to find the cheapest alternative to buying a couple hundred sollar part.

Mind you this is soley armchair quarter back with my opnion based entirely on the lack of any facts.

What was the oil leak repair? Oil pan or rear main? My beat qas it was something large

They said it was the rear main seal and the water pump. There was absolutely no issue with the transmission when I took it in for repairs of the leaks. They are offering to buy it from me for $500. I just paid them $3200 for the repairs that made the car unusable!

I'm done with this car. It's going to the salvage yard.

I would recommend a second opinion. And isn't $500 better than salvage?

WOW! This kind of thing just absolutely infuriates me. I know its most likely too late for ljhg, but if something like this happens don't just let them walk all over you.
First, get an appointment with the GM. He has to know what his people are trying to do. If he doesn't take action, its on him.
Second, get a lawyer. An official letter from a lawyer goes a long way, costs very little and might be all that is needed.
Next, get some audio recordings of these thieves admitting they fouled up, if possible. *Only do this if you are in a "one party state".
Finally, get busy on social media. Don't trash the company, but make sure they know that thousands of local car buyers are going to know what they are doing. Don't be afraid to mention the GM, SM and the "techs" by name. It goes without saying I would cancel that check and get my car out of their possession.
I would spend that $3200 on a billboard and full page newspaper ad telling the world how rotten these people are before I let them have a dime.
Good luck to you,
Gator
