Trying to help mother-in-law with 05 Freestyle CVT issues

Post by racerx3 » Sat Apr 11, 2015 3:13 pm

Hi all,

After spending the last hour scouring the internet and some time on these forums, I'd like to ask for help with this problem.

My mother-in-law is driving an '05 Freestyle FWD with CVT / ~110K miles. She's been complaining about issues with power loss, rough acceleration, etc. I finally drove the car and... WHOA is this thing bad.

I know nothing of the voodoo that is a CVT, having only experience with manual transmissions. But it seems to me that the powertrain and ignition system are not communicating. Pulled code; among others, U0401.

It seems to me that I should check the fuses, connectors and wiring harness between the ECU and PCM. I do not know where to look for the PCM, though, as there is no flashing neon sign pointing to it under the hood.

Can anyone point me in the right direction here? I'm capable mechanically, but I don't like to start projects unless I know precisely what I'm doing and looking for. Thanks, hope everyone is having a great weekend.
