Miss/shudder under low speed load

Post by jas88 » Mon Apr 21, 2014 4:19 pm

So the wife's FS has developed a miss or shudder when taking off from stop or when accelerating from low speed. However, I get no codes and I have checked several times over the past month or so that this has been going on. The first thing that comes to mind is a bad COP, but that would give me a miss code, wouldn't it? I am wondering if I have an oil leak that is filling the spark plug hole with oil and making a bad connection (oil is an insulator). I pulled all the front COPs and the holes were clean so, if this is the issue, it's on the rear bank. Just wondering if you have other suggestions before I pull the intake off. Car has 220K miles on it and was last tuned up at 155K.

OK it's getting serious now. I have replaced the COPs and also the spark plugs and I still have the problem. Could this be the CVT going out?

What was the finding?

My 2006 Freestyle started this two days ago where is it would seem like it would miss especially if you slowly accelerated while going up a hill. Yesterday it got really back and all the dash lights came on and it shifted in low gear until I parked and restarted the car. After that the battery light stayed on. I drove it to the local shop but I would have rather saved some bucks and fixed it myself. Note: Just had it tuned up (new plugs) and a new alternator installed a few months ago along.

Ok, repair shop founds lots of thing wrong:
1. Duralast Gold Alternator from Autozone that was just replaced new a few months ago went bad.
2. Coil pack on Cylinder #2 was going bad so it was replaced along with all the other plug boots.
3. CV passenger side half shaft was going bad as boots were tore and it was making a grinding noise.
4. Passenger side ball joint was bad.
5. Throttle body and Mass Air Flow sensor were cleaned.

Freestyle is back up and running fine and doesn't seem to be knocking/clicking like it did before.
Total bill around $1500 (half in parts and the other half in labor)

I never found the problem. The FS just kept going like this until we sold it with 235K miles on it.

The shudder was your cvt belt slipping. It's amazing you got to 235k miles, most of them crap out at 130k if not serviced or abused. I read a forum that said stop and go traffic/traveling under 4mph/riding the brake to a halt is horrible for the cvt and will cause a lot of stress and heat to the belts.

Well I changed the fluid and HP filter every 50k miles so it was serviced.

Do you mind telling me the parts number or brand of the filters and cvt fluid you used. It's 2016 and it's kinda hard to find this info on a 11 year old vehicle

The HP filter is Motorcraft FT178. I use Motorcraft fluid that is for the CVT only(XT-7-QCFT).

My FS has been running great for 175000 miles. I did a major tuneup: injectors, Plugs, coils, sensors and now I have this problem driving me crazy. The miss codes are coils A and E; 1 and 5 primary/secondary circuit. I have switched coils and plugs, all wiring ohms 0.0, and with a test light but still get the same codes. No other codes. I visually saw all injectors spraying. the only loose connection is the pvc vent out of the rear (1,2,3) cylinder head where the O ring isn't tight, and what seems like to much oil being pushed out there into the vent line and then a few drips out when parked. The EGR port in the intake tube is dirty and probably a bit plugged. I wonder if the EGR and PVC would contribute to this problem.

I did my plugs, intake manifold gaskets, PCV valve and O ring in the EGR. I read on one of the forums that the EGR O ring flattens out and allows air into the intake manifold thus causing a vacuum leak issue. I purchased from the dealer. I also have a vibration at low speeds between 1200-1400 RPM. I was thinking it may be my fuel injectors or COP's or even a CV half shaft. I'm still searching for an answer to the vibration. Let me know what you find out.

Mine started soon after I replaced the half-shafts, so I always suspected that was the problem, although I could not find anything wrong with them visually.
