Buy OEM Ford Motorcraft plugs only, source does not matter as long as they are genuine Motorcraft parts (RockAuto, dealer, eBay, Amazon, etc). No need to replace coils unless you diagnose one as bad through a misfire. Coils don't wear like plugs. Most aftermarket coils are of inferior quality compared to original ones.

Ok.

Thanks for the feed back.

I keep on getting code p0171

I bought this FS with the bad transmission, and now that I have it running I got this code.

I've changed sensors my last resort is the spark plugs.

I would like to say thank you to all the people on this blog. If it wasn't for your posting of the experiences that you all had, I would of never had this great FS.

I just went on a 1,800 mile road trip and the FS did great, no problems at all. Once again thankyou!

Question?

So does the mercury montego have a 6speed?
Also if yes, is it possible to transfer it over to Freestyle?

The Motego had the same optional choices for the trans as the 500, so yes.

What is an ECO? Please elaborate on your question - this thread is about transmission swaps although I know it has had some detours along the way.

So this is the weekend for me to do the swap on my 2006 FS DD. The trans has been howling for about 4 months now and keeps getting louder and louder, yet it still drives perfectly and no warning lights at all. If you were deaf you would never know there was a problem.

My donor car is a 2007 Montego. I paid too much and got the wrong year, but it was all that I could get my hands on with my CVT ticking like a time-bomb. Last night I confirmed again that the 2007 ECU will not work in my 2006 FS. I have the 2006 500 ECU in my FS now (from the previous swap) and it operates the car just fine (but with the TC/ABS lights on). I haven't yanked the CVT yet, I was just fooling around last night and wanted to give the 2007 ECU another shot but no-go. The manufactured date on the Montego is 6/06 so it's a really early 2007 model and still, the ECU won't work.

My stepson has been driving around all this time in the 2007 FS I did last May with the TC/ABS lights on, so my hope is this weekend I can put the 3 boxes from the 2007 Montego into his car and then use the 2006 TCM he has on mine and make all our lights go out. We will see.

Did the swap this weekend but made some mistakes along the way that kept me from finishing it up in time for work today. It was disappointing, I did the earlier swap last May on a test mule so I could find out all the things to look out for, but it went very smoothly. Now on my DD, it seems I keep stepping on rakes. Just trying to work too fast to get it done for Monday morning I guess.

Anyway, I did get the ECU, TCM, and ABS module from the 2006 500 that I used last May and put them all in my DD and it runs with no warning lights, so this is the hot ticket for getting the ABS and TC lights to go out. Just be aware, as I have stated before, 2007 is not compatible with 2005-06. I should have it on the road this week.

OK so the FS is on the road and everything is working fine, no warning lights at all. I must say I kinda miss the CVT (never thought I would say that). The 6-speed always seem to be lugging in too high of a gear, or winding out in too low of a gear, it's not as peppy as the CVT and seems to have lost about 1 mpg, although it's probably too early to tell on that for sure. I will get used to it, just glad to have my commuting buddy back.

I also miss my CVT and I drive a MKx to compare it too.
Glad to hear that you succeed in your quest.

Going back to the original post on this, by Cobol, I am not sure why he had so much trouble. There must have been more to the story than he told us, but, since his FS was a 2007, I am betting the donor car was a 2005-06 and he fell victim to the incompatibility that I ran into on my first swap. 2005-06 ECU cannot be used on a 2007, and vice-versa.

So, as an update, my MPG is for sure off. I have a ScanGauge in my car to monitor MPG, and I am off about 1 MPG, maybe a little more, from before the swap. Prior to the swap, my FS always returned right at 22 MPG all around. Now I am struggling to make 21 MPG. I guess this lends credence to Ford's marketing material for the FS that stated the CVT offered greater efficiency over a conventional automatic. So those of you who hate on the CVT, and wonder why in the world Ford chose that for the FS, now you know.

The whole idea of the CVT is to allow the engine to operate in its most efficient RPM range more than a traditional trans can.

Yes, of course that is the idea, but some question how true that is. Someone on this thread a few pages back said they were getting better MPG with the 6-speed, but that is not my experience.
