It's really not that serious of an issue.
4.6 & 5.4 spit plugs all the time.

My 4.6 Explorer spit a plug couple years ago. I found a local shade tree mechanic that had a kit to make the repair. Only took about 20 minuets and $100 bill.

Spark plug blown out and took sleeve with it

Post by Browning723 » Fri Oct 20, 2017 1:50 am

Hey all. Ive had my Freestyle for almost 2 years now. Not a bad family vehicle. A couple of months ago though i was going up a slight grade and she blew the spark plug out of cylinder 3. The sneaky little thing is it took what looks to be a sleeve with it. Any idea what that is or how to fix it?

Welcome, I moved this here, it's counterproductive to post the same thing in different places. I'm not sure what you mean by the "sleeve" You might pop one of the other COPs off to compare the plug hole. If you read this topic you will find the info on how to repair the thread. Basically you drill out the remains of the old thread, use an oversize tap to create a new thread, then insert a Helicoil (brand name, there are other mfgs.) Just about any auto parts store should have the kit.

Ok. I wasnt sure if there was a sleeve in there but i looked again early this morning and saw that it was actually the treads that had blown out. Thanks for the help. This thread will be extremely helpful for my repairs. The other problem ive run into is the the engine has dropped im guessing my motor mounts went bad too. Hey mmsstar how do you like the Flex?

I love it! I really liked the Freestyle but the Flex has just out shone it. Both were company cars. We would turn them in about every 4 years or around 90k miles. The Flex was my 6th company vehicle and I was always ready for the next one after 4 years. I got the Flex in August of 2010 and I'm still not at that point! When I had the opportunity to take the Flex with me when I retired it was a no brainer!

I feel the freestyle leaves a lot of performance to be desired. But ive been lucky with mine. Everyone has issues with their cvts and ive had none at all. This is the first major issue with it. Its user servicable right? I havent serviced it in the two years ive had it.

You can do the fluid & filters, just be sure to use the proper fluid, do a couple of drain & fills and you will pretty well get the old fluid exchanged.
