Outroduction

Well all, after 241,000 miles it's time to move on but no fault of the Freestyle. With my girls growing up and slowly leaving the nest and much less "family time" spent in the car I was weighing more often the options of "drive it until it dies" or look for something else while it's still in terrifi...

Re: Life with a high mileage Freestyle

We're at 208,000 with ours, replaced the CVT input shaft bearing & o-ring @ 180,000 (or was it 160,000...getting old), will be replacing the tie rods and ends next week since I noticed a tiny bit of play in them when I swapped the snow tires off last month. Amazing that the rest of the suspension, m...

200,000

Hello all, I haven't checked in here in a while, primarily because I haven't had any issues with the FS. The only thing of note is passing the 200,000 mile mark a couple of weeks ago and the car is still as quiet and squeak/rattle free as the day we bought it. Aside from regular scheduled maintenanc...

Re: Trans Whine

All done, finished last week but too busy since to post. Replacing the input shaft, bearing, and o-ring were the easy part...getting the trans/PTU out was the typical PITA but I knew that before I started. Getting the unit apart was tricky, the PTU didn't want to come off. Time and patience got it d...

Re: Trans Whine

I posted in another thread here somewhere, I'm replacing the input shaft bearing and o-ring, and the input shaft if it's scored or mics undersize.

Re: CVT same as AWD 500?

Thanks Jack. True, and I'd also thought that it's possibly just the bearing...I mean, it's really not loud at all, barely perceptible but it's there. I deal with industrial-style gearboxes etc every day and bearing noise is one of those sounds that my ear picks up right away. "Just in case", do you ...

Re: CVT same as AWD 500?

From what I've always understood the AWD and FWD CVT's are different from each other...not sure how. Mounting to the PTU? Mechatronic specs? Not sure what, but supposedly they're "different".

CVT same as AWD 500?

Of all days for me to have to figure out what to do about the trans, it had to be one where I'm short on sleep and dead tired. Not much brain function right now, ha ha. Anyway... I know it was figured out here a while back but a search didn't turn up the "definitive" answer and I don't remember: is ...

Re: Trans Whine

A-Ha....finally. I started the FS to go to work this morning and there it was: "thunk thunk thunk thunk thunk". A faint but distinct "helicopter" sound in park and neutral. Went away when I put it in drive but reappeared when the car started to move. More noticeable after work but still not ridiculo...

Re: List of Cars owned

Why did many of you need so many cars, one car per year sometimes? For myself, a new car could cover me 10 years+. Or, if Japanese models are so reliably last long , one car is enough, my thought. I've been a car "nut" since I was a kid, restoring old cars with my grandfather. When I started to dri...

Re: List of Cars owned

I would probably crash the server, ha ha. Several dozen, I lost count a long time ago. Sometimes if I'm having trouble falling asleep I'll start at the beginning and try to list/count the cars I've owned. I usually don't get past 30-something (which would be in the mid 1990's sometime) before I nod ...

Re: Found the GOFAST button

Half throttle off the line until the engine RPM clears 2500, then plant the pedal to the floor :P . Pissed off a guy in an Acura TL and surprised another guy in a Ford F150. Disclaimer: not responsible for your CVT detonating on you., but have fun anyway. I think there is a switch on the back of th...

Re: AWD Maintence: Part 1

As Jack mentioned I drilled/tapped for a drain plug on the bevel gear unit, on the bottom of the case a bit toward the rear. Can't recall the thread size right now but it was for a spare Volvo magnetic drain plug (w/crush washer) that I had left over from my Volvos. Makes changing the fluid super ea...

Re: 6055.8 mile trip and some statistics

During long rural freeway trips (200+ miles) I get 24ish mpg @ 74mph, +/- 1 depending on tail/headwind. It always amuses me when I see claims here of 27mpg highway (70mph) on a Freestyle with AWD, must be all downhill, ha ha. I was getting 30-32 mpg (imperial gallons), which would be 26 mpg USG, bu...
