Hi, new to the group.

I bought a 2008 Taurus X a few months ago and it bugs me that when I want to run my GPS I have to have the power cord snake down the front of the radio.

What I want to do is add a cigarette style power plug inside the storage cubbie above the radio. Then trim the back of the door so that the power cord can be fed inside. I think this would keep things nice and clean.

What I can't find are any screws or anything that would allow me to take things apart. I'm a hands on person but I don't want to destroy my nice dash by doing this.

Any help would be appreciated. ~ Noel.

I think the limiting factor will be the ductwork for the the center vents which run under the storage bin. Unless you don't intend to mount a 12v jack there. You could just drill a hole and run a wire to 12v behind the center console somewhere.

The trim piece around the radio and ventilation controls just pulls off. Work your fingers or perhaps a wide-blade screwdriver under the trim piece, going carefully around the perimeter, and, with a little tug here and there, it should pop off. You'll have to disconnect a few things to remove it completely, but removing this should allow you to see under the cubby and get in there to install what you want.

I did this to my 06 Limited to use my Garmin. Follow Jaunty's instructions to get the panel off covering the radio and HVAC controls. You will have put the gear selector lever in low and disconnect the wires to the air bag warning light between the top vents (if it is the same on the T-Rex as the FS)

You can then see the screws to remove the cubby and cover assembly. if you want to.

I got a cigarette lighter socket with a bracket and only made two small holes in the cubby floor to mount the screws. The wires came through the opening for the hinge and have not caused any problems. I also stuck the mounting disc to the floor of the cubby. I wired the added outlet to the one at the base of the panel.

When I use the GPS in the car the cubby cover will sometines even act as a sun shield. I will remove the socket and just put the pad back in there when I trade the car.

The GPS goes in the center console during stops, the cable and mount can stay in the cubby but the cable will need to be unplugged. I have it mounted as far back in the right hand side facing into the car. It might have worked better facing it sideways but it hasn't bothered me enough to re do it.
